Post Title: Project Assistant

Type of appointment: Fixed term.

Remuneration: $1,000-1,200 per month depending on experience.

Duration of contract: 12 months (potentially renewable or convertible to a permanent position, subject to performance review)

Location: Jakarta-based with the opportunity to travel.

This position is open to Indonesian citizens only.


EJF works internationally to inform policy and drive systemic, durable reforms to protect our environment and defend human rights. We investigate and expose abuses and support environmental defenders, Indigenous peoples, communities, and independent journalists on the frontlines of environmental injustice. Our campaigns aim to secure peaceful, equitable and sustainable futures. Our investigators, researchers, filmmakers, and campaigners work with grassroots partners and environmental defenders across the globe.

Our work to secure environmental justice aims to protect our global climate, ocean, forests, and wildlife and defend fundamental human rights.

EJF has worked in Indonesia since 2018 to end illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and human rights abuses on fishing vessels, build journalist capacity to report on environmental crimes, and actively promote improvements to policymaking, corporate governance and management of fisheries.

EJF is seeking to employ a full-time position of 'Project assistant’ to help in implementing its journalist capacity building project objectives across Indonesia. This position will include liaising with and coordinating with project partners, journalists, media agencies and local activists across the country; conducting desk-based research; planning field-based investigations alongside EJF campaigners and journalists; completing administrative tasks and reports for project activities.

Successful candidates should be comfortable working independently, be adept at team coordination, conducting both desk-based and field-based research, confident in public speaking, and be prepared to travel within Indonesia, potentially at short notice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct data collection, analysis, and research related to environmental crimes and activism.
  • Liaise with journalists, local CSOs, media agencies, and other key partners.
  • Support the project’s admin and finance—taking minutes of meetings, preparing letters and MOU, assisting project logistics, preparing financial documents, etc.
  • Assist in the planning and operation of workshops, online and offline events.
  • Assist the field activities conducted in the project and support the reporting and documentation.
  • Support other EJF projects in the Southeast Asia region if necessary.


Essential skills and experience:

  • Bahasa Indonesian native speaker.
  • Professional proficiency in the English language
  • A degree in any relevant discipline (journalism, international relations, development studies, social-political science, environmental science, marine sciences, etc)
  • Minimum one year of working experience in relevant areas (NGOs, private sector, journalism, field research work, etc).
  • Demonstrable experience forming and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to use desk-based internet research to gather information.
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc) and google based documents (G drive, google doc, google sheet etc)
  • Strong communication and writing skills both in Bahasa and English
  • Have a good eye on photography.
  • Willing to travel across Indonesia.


Desirable skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable interest in or experience working on any of the following topics: environmental crimes, journalism reporting, sustainable fisheries, and forestry.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Experience in conducting field based environmental projects and preparing project administrations including financing and reporting.
  • Car driving license.
